The Panzer IIIJ was a medium tank, which was designed to be used as an infantry support tank and to engage in direct combat with other tanks.

The Panzer IIIJ was armed with a 50mm KwK 39 L/60 main gun and had a secondary armament of two 7.92mm machine guns. It had a maximum armor thickness of 50mm on the front of the hull, and 30mm on the sides and rear. It was powered by a Maybach HL 120 TRM engine, which provided a maximum road speed of 40 km/h (25 mph).

The Panzer IIIJ was used extensively on the Eastern Front and in the North Africa campaigns.
